Adding New Contacts to Contact Groups

Add Contacts Window Overview

The Add Contacts window appears when you click the Add Contacts icon in the Main window or when you select Add Contacts from the File menu.

The Add Contacts window contains the following items:

  • Find Contact — Search either by user ID or Name. When searching by User ID, be sure you specify the server where the user resides.

  • Add Contacts To — Select the Contacts group to which you want to add your contact.

  • Contacts to Add — Displays a list of contacts that matches the search criteria. They are identified by a user or group icon, a user name or group name followed by the @ symbol, and the domain on which they are configured.

  • Find Contact button — Click to search for a contact.

  • OK button — Click to add the contacts to the selected contact group.

  • Cancel button — Returns without adding any contacts.

  • Help button — Displays this Help topic.

To Search for and Add Contacts to a Contact Group

Contacts are users or groups to whom you frequently send instant messages, alerts, and polls. Contacts are either individual users or LDAP groups. Adding contacts to a contact group consists of using the Add Contacts window to:

  • Search for those contacts in the LDAP directories you want to communicate with on a regular basis

  • Select those contacts that your search has matched

  • Add those selected contacts to your contact groups

Follow these steps to search for and add contacts to a contact group:

  1. In the Main window, with the Contact List tab selected, select Add Contacts from the File menu or click the Add Contacts icon.
  2. The Add Contacts window appears.

    Tip - Right-click on a contact group to display a pop-up menu. From here you can add and delete users, and work with contact groups.


  3. Search for contacts you want to add to your contact groups.

    See Add Contacts Window Overview for more information.

  4. After entering the user name or ID, click OK. The result is displayed in the Contacts to Add or if your search finds more than one match, the Select Contact window is displayed.

    If the Select Contact window is displayed, select the contacts that you want to add to a contact group and click OK. You can use multiple selection in this window. See Selecting Contacts and Contact Groups for more information.

    The Add Contacts window is updated with the contacts and the Select Contact window is closed.

  5. Use the Add contact(s) to drop-down menu to select a contact group and click Add Contact(s) button.

    The Instant Messenger program updates your contact group with the contacts.

  6. To remove a contact from the list, right-click the contact in the Contacts list and select Delete. Or, you can select the Delete option from the File menu of the main Instant Messenger window.
