Instant Messaging 8 Update 1 Quick Reference Guide
The Instant Messaging Quick Reference Guide provides a quick reference to the user interface of the Instant Messaging client.
Instant Messenger User Interface Overview
System Requirements
Sun Java System Instant Messenger software requires:
JavaTM 2 Platform version 1.4.2 or later, which includes:
Java Runtime Environment version 1.4.2 or later
Java Plug-in: For Windows platform only. Use Java Web Start for Windows.
Java Web Start: Use Java Web Start on all platforms except on Windows (although Java Web Start is recommended on Windows).
J2SE (both JRE and SDK) runs on the following operating systems and CPUs:
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/system-configurations.html
or
Mac OS make Java and Java Web Start available by default, enabling you to effortlessly get started with the Instant Messenger program. However, if you encounter any problem refer to Troubleshooting Instant Messenger.
Installing Java
Both the Java Plug-in and Java Web Start are included with the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version 1.4.2 or later.
If you do not have version 1.4.2 or later, install the latest JRE version from http://java.sun.com/j2se/downloads.html.
After installing Java, launch the Instant Messenger user interface (See Launching Instant Messenger With Java Web Start). if you are unable to launch the user interface, refer to Troubleshooting Instant Messenger.
Launching Instant Messenger With Java Web Start
Launch the Sun Java System Instant Messenger user interface using Java Web Start, which is an application launcher for Java 2 applets. Once the Sun Java System Instant Messenger user interface is launched, your browser can be closed or used to locate other URLs without affecting the Sun Java System Instant Messenger session.
To Launch the User Interface
- Enter the URL provided by your system administrator in your browser or click the Start button. This will cause Java Web Start to download the Sun Java System Instant Messenger applet.
- A sign-on window displays. Enter your login name and password in the sign-on window and click OK.
- After the login name and password are authenticated, the main Sun Java
System Instant Messenger window is displayed.
Note - The first time you use Sun Java System Instant Messenger, you may have to grant the messenger execution rights on your system.
This procedure assumes that your browser was able to find Java Web Start on your system.
If Java Web Start Does Not Launch
The reasons why Java Web Start may not launch are: Java Web Start is not installed, or Java Web Start is not enabled for your browser.
If Java Web Start is not installed, download the latest version of the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) software from http://java.sun.com/j2se/downloads.html.
JRE software, versions 1.4.2 and later, includes Java Web Start.
If Java Web Start is not enabled for your browser, refer to the Java Web Start installation manual for details on how to enable Java Web Start.
For versions 1.4.2, find the installation manual at the following URL:
Once Java Web Start is installed and enabled, try launching the user interface again. If you are still having trouble, see Troubleshooting Instant Messenger.
Troubleshooting Instant Messenger
If you had trouble launching the Instant Messenger user interface, its possible that your network environment uses proxies. Use the following information to fix this problem:
Difficulty in Loading Resources During a Launch - Proxy Settings. By default, Java Web Start attempts to connect to the Internet directly. If your network environment uses proxies, Java Web Start may need to be configured to use the HTTP proxy. This can be done from the Preferences panel of the Java Web Start Application Manager.
For UNIX and Linux platforms:
The Java Web Start Application Manager is invoked by calling:
$ jws-install-dir /javaws/javaws &
Where jws-install-dir is the installation directory you chose when installing Java Web Start.
For Windows and Mac platforms:
The Java Web Start Application Manager can be started from the Programs section of the Start Menu.
Windows Platform: Configuring the System to Start Messenger Automatically (Java Web Start only)
Java Web Start provides you with the ability to create shortcuts on your Windows desktop or in your Windows Start menu to download applications.
To create shortcuts of Instant Messenger:
Start the Java Web Start Application Manager. The Java Web Start program icon is displayed within the Programs option of the Start menu.
Once the application manager is started, view the downloaded applications. If you have successfully used Sun Java System Instant Messenger before, you should see an icon for it.
Select the Sun Java System Instant Messenger icon.
Open the shortcut creation dialog from the Application menu.
Create shortcuts.
The above procedure alone will not cause Sun Java System Instant Messenger to start automatically when you start your computer. To automatically start the Sun Java System Instant Messenger, copy one of the shortcuts created to the startup folder (or startup group). This can be done from the Start menu by:
Locating the Sun Java System Instant Messenger icon among the programs in your Start menu.
Dragging the Sun Java System Instant Messenger icon to the Startup folder (also in the programs pull-down) by holding the Ctrl key.

Use these steps to search for and add contacts to a contact group:
